Down from five, one sense at a time
Name each thing to yourself, silently or out loud. Naming does more work than looking.
- Find five things you can see. Look properly at each one before moving on.
- Find four things you can feel: fabric on skin, the floor, the air, the weight of your own hands.
- Find three things you can hear. Include the quiet ones you had filtered out.
- Find two things you can smell. If you cannot find any, name two smells you like.
- Find one thing you can taste, or one thing you are glad is true today.
- Take a breath and notice where you are. The list has done its job.
