One breath, taken on purpose
The only rule is that the exhale runs longer than the inhale. Everything else is optional.
- Stop what you are doing. Take your hands off the keyboard if they are on it.
- Breathe in through the nose for a count of four.
- Breathe out through the mouth, slowly, for a count of six or eight.
- Notice the pause at the bottom of the exhale before the next breath arrives.
- If you have time for a second one, take a second one. Three is plenty.
- Then decide what to do. The decision is usually different from the one you were about to make.
